Today is International Lefthanders Day, a day celebrating the uniqueness of lefties!
Here's some light-hearted reflections from some of the lefthanders amongst us at Punter Southall Aspire!
A left-handed lament (Gavin Zaprzala-Banks)
"When I was ten years old I went, filled with excitement, to a group guitar-lesson for complete beginners.
Dreaming of what this new adventure might bring I picked up one of the guitars and sat with it across my lap. After a quick glance around the group, the teacher sighed, walked over to me and took the guitar back.
“Sorry,” he said, “I don’t teach left-handers.”
Now, I’m sure in the same situation Hendrix or McCartney would simply have found their own guitar and taught themselves. I left the lesson and took up the clarinet instead. Rock’n’roll!
The non-trials of being left-handed (Helen Battrick)
"Being left-handed is tough because we’re good at everything.
With ‘Super Lefties’ including the likes of Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie, Lionel Messi, Buzz Aldrin, Leonardo Da Vinci, Oprah Winfrey, and David Bowie, lefties are imbued with creativity, adaptability AND sporting prowess – so as a left-hander, it can be difficult to decide how best to bestow our gifts upon the world.
It’s a hard life being talented in quite so many different ways, but someone has to live it."
A topsy-turvy world (Sarah Tolson)
"I’ve known stationery had it in for me since the days of using a fountain pen at school (hands up whose left hand was covered in ink? Not just me but surely every left-hander out there…).
However, my daughter, one of the next generation of lefties, pointed out a new left-handed problem just the other day: using a promotional biro to write her homework, she realised the company logo printed on it was upside-down, which meant she couldn’t easily read it (try this at home and you’ll see what she means).
A sign that the world doesn’t know how to communicate with us lefties? Maybe…"
Shout out to the lefties out there - have a great International Lefthanders Day!
